Something I learned today

There was something I saw about a year ago and I didn't understand it till just today...

About a year ago I went to this so called "electronics" show and sale in the local major city it cost me 7 dollars to get in and I  looked around to see what it was all about.  I kept seeing all these older computers which is understandable but they all had background screens on them that had a big 7 on them or implied that they were Windows 7 but when you look at them for 2 seconds you can see they are windows XP.   At that time I just thought they had put a background screen on them to confuse people and sell more computers.

Well today I had a customer whom called me about a virus issue and I picked up their laptop and brought it back to the shop to fix it, as I was doing my usual stuff I noticed that it didn't look like a normal XP install and thought it was because of the brand. As I looked for certain information I found that it stated that it was a Windows 7 Royale XP which made me go on a search.

What I found is that this is just a mod to make windows XP look more like Windows 7 and its supposed to add more features as well,  well I find a few problems with this

1. adding mods and more bells and whistles to and older machine only slows it down quite a bit.
2. this gives the customer the feeling that they are getting a good deal "getting a computer with windows 7".
3. they sell you this system stripped down the bare minimum so that you have to pay for upgrades.
4. they sell you a computer with a 10 year old operating system which is not bad if you know you are getting  XP
5. you end up paying way more for the computer than say if I were to sell you a refurbished/used computer

The customer had mentioned that they had bought this laptop at the electronics show and sale thinking they got a good deal but realized afterwards that another 100 dollars would have gotten them a new computer.

I am not pointing fingers at any customers they had no idea I just don't like to see people get cheated and I do wish if anyone would be buying a new or used computer email me/call me and ask if its a good deal or not.

P/S. I need more people in my area  Nashua, Plainfield, Charles City, Ionia, New Hampton, Greene, anything local to here to Like my page I would love to reach out to more people if it were to just help them make the right decisions or to be able to help them out when they need it.

As I have stated before I am a tech not a writer so please forgive me if this is confusing.

  1. Good write up. I think more people should be aware of what they are selling. Consumers do not always know what they are buying and will believe what they are told. More research should be done and if you do not know computers ask. Very good point Chris~

    Thanks!
