What is Geocaching?

Geocaching has been something I have been interested in for quite some time now.

Okay I bet most of you have never heard of Geocaching. Well I will explain what it is.

Here is a short video on what its about.

Geocaching is sort of an online treasure hunt that takes place outdoors. You would go to the website geocaching.com and sign up for a free account then take a look at your local area by imputing your zipcode.

In the box you enter your zipcode which will take you to another page that shows how many hidden treasures there are within 100 miles of that particular location like the following

I signed up for this years ago and never got into it till the last 3 years when I moved back here to Iowa and when I checked this area there was about 700 or so caches within 100 miles of my town.  As you see above there are 9060 and as I was writing this today 4 more popped up on that list.

This whole site and idea have been around for more than 10 years now and has been growing quite fast with over 3 million caches all over the world.  You can check out how many there are on the Geocaching map here  http://www.geocaching.com/map/beta/  just zoom out to see just how many there are.

This is just the US alone.

To start off you need to buy one thing a GPS any handheld simple GPS will do they run around 100 dollars and you can buy them pretty much anywhere I bought mine from Ebay for 60 dollars but its basically the most basic one you can get and some times the accuracy is about 40 feet of the actual location which makes it a little hard to find stuff. If you have a smart phone you can download the Geocaching App and use the GPS and compass built into the phone.

A short how to video on your first cache.

This is something that almost everyone enjoys, kids love it and its great to get the family out for the weekends.  Another great idea is for you to plan ahead for a trip and while you are in another state on vacation or visiting family you can try to get a few caches in while you are there.
