On Monday we were experiencing some strange issues with our internet it was acting quite slow and normally we would just reboot the network which everyone should do every month or so anyway (a router/modem is just like a normal computer and needs to reboot every so often) but we are a full work at home family one of which telecommutes and needs to stay on most of the day. We waited till later on at night when everyone was going to bed to reboot the Modem, Router, Hubs, various computers around the house and in doing so we found the modem would not start back up.
Our Modem was a fairly old modem but it still worked great never had any problems so we never bothered to upgrade. It was an Actiontec GT701 which is a modem that Centurylink/Qwest sold/rented years ago, we owned ours.
Since we are a computer repair shop we do have extra parts here and there and we did have an extra modem that we swapped out which would not connect to the internet either...
This all happened in the middle of the night so there was not much help with technical support at that time so we had to wait till morning to get a hold of someone who could give us more help. The next morning they told us that this modem does not work with the line speeds we are receiving (12Mbps DSL). Interesting thing about that is we have had the 12Mbps line speed for almost a year now with this same modem. My thought on this is that they must have done some sort of update on Monday which caused us to have this issue and to force us to upgrade. During this down time no one could work from the house which is not a good thing so I ran down to Walmart and purchased a new modem/router for $100 dollars which worked right away.
My concerns on this are that I know of several customers who still use this same modem that are going to have these same problems, I have not had any calls because of this but they may have just called Centurylink first in this case.
I hope that this information does help anyone that is having issues with their internet being slow and if any of my customers need any help just give me a call.
