This weekend was quite interesting.
This last weekend was the Big 4 Fair here in Nashua, I had been wanting to get in on this for awhile now but didn't know how I was going to achieve that. It should be no big deal really pay $50 dollars get a booth and do what I do best, Geek out.
Well I want to do something elaborate, where I can setup a big flat panel TV with it connected to a computer and talk to a local neighbor to get a wireless connection to use for the weekend. Ideally I want to set it all up to play video games, watch Hulu and surf the web. I would like to bring in a small couch a coffee table and set it up to look like a living room just to show off what I am capable of doing for the customer.
This all sounds nice for something down the road but I don't have the money to do that yet and I knew all the booths would be taken. So I asked around and found that the lovely ladies whom run Main Street Matters were having a meeting (they help with promoting local business here in town) and it was suggested to me that I go attend and discuss my proposal I had been thinking about.
I went in and sat down at the table and they all looked at me and asked what they could help me out with and I gave them my idea. I told them about how I would like to volunteer my time during the fair helping them out promoting the local businesses and some of the things current things going on here in town and in return I would like to hand out my business cards and flyers while I am there. They agreed that this would be a wonderful idea and would love it if more people would volunteer their time like this.
I was able to borrow a small table to setup my laptop, some flyers and business cards and a big bowl of candy to help, and started setting up Thursday afternoon. Friday morning 10am I get there and it was pretty quiet, people are still at work, kids are still at school. I ended up staying till 10pm and got some help after 6pm which allowed me to take breaks to walk around and hand out candy to everyone. I was only asked to be there Friday morning and Saturday afternoon but I tried to be there as much as possible throughout the whole 4 days.
Overall I handed out 80 to 100 flyers and business cards, talked to many many people some whom know me well and was happy to see me helping out and many whom did not know I was even in town and were glad they found out.
This weekend was fun and I hope to do more next year and make it a bigger event. I know everyone had fun with me and I livened up the place with all my geeky gadgets, laser lights and flashy LED's.... lets not forget about the candy!
