Dropbox what is it?

Another one of my reviews of software or services where I get to play with it and recommend to you.

I am not sure whom of you have heard or use the new service dropbox I have heard about it for a year now and have been watching it and hearing good things about it so I decided to try it ...

Dropbox... what is it? Well it is a service that allows you to sync files from your computer to an online folder kinda like a backup but it does much more than that. This may sound like another one of those sites that you can backup your files to and pay a monthly fee so that your files are safe in case your computer fails but it also syncs that data from your computer to this online folder on the fly.

first off  you get 2gb of space for free (that's 2 thousand megabytes for those of you who don't know) you can pay for more space if  needed. That's on average 2 thousand pictures more or less depending on size. Several thousand spreadsheet documents.

second you download a small program that allows you to sync a folder on your computer to the online folder (just drop a file in and it does its thing automatically)

third you can download and install this small program to any computer or mobile device (andrioid, iphone, etc.) and it will sync that online folder to any other computer you wish to share with. So if you are like me and have 10 computers in the house or multiple mobile devices you can install this program on each one and it will make sure you have identical files on each device.

This is great for companies which need to share files with employee's, just drop the file in the dropbox folder and it automatically will sync up to each employee's comptuer/cell phone/tablet pc.

------ Wikipedia's blurb about dropbox -----

Dropbox is a Web-based file hosting service operated by Dropbox, Inc. that uses cloud computing to enable users to store and share files and folders with others across the Internet using file synchronization. It was founded in 2007 by MIT graduates Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi as a Y Combinator startup.

There are both free and paid services, each with varying options. In comparison to similar services, Dropbox offers a relatively large number of user clients across a variety of desktop and mobile operating systems. There are a number of versions across many operating systems, including versions for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux (official and unofficial), as well as versions for mobile devices, such as Android, Windows Phone 7, iPhone, iPad and BlackBerry, and a web-based client for when no local client is installed. Dropbox uses the freemium financial model and its free service provides 2 GB of free online storage. Users who refer Dropbox to others can gain up to 8 GB of free storage. The service's major competitors include Box.net, Egnyte, Windows Live SkyDrive, Ubuntu One, TitanFile, SugarSync, Mozy, ZumoDrive, SpiderOak and Wuala.
